Synlait is an integrated Canterbury dairy farm owner and milk processor that manufactures raw milk into milk powder and AMF, as ingredients for dairy consumer companies or repacking under customer brands.Located in one of the fastest growing milk producing regions in New Zealand, Synlait commenced milk production at the state of the art milk processing facility in August 2008. In October 2008 an extension of Stage One was completed to enable the manufacture of SMP at 1.5 million litres of raw milk per day including adding separation capacity and a cold process reverse osmosis plant ahead of the evaporator, and a 7.0 tonnes/hour AMF plant to process cream. A small scale special milks plant (0.3 tonnes/hour) was constructed as a product development, early commercial, and nutritional powder production plant and production commenced in August 2009. Entering it’s third dairy season Synlait Milk is capable of producing 8.2 tonnes/hour milk powder dryer specified for WMP with peak processing capacity of 1.2 million litres of raw milk per day - approximately 50,000 tonnes of dairy product per annum. The plant exports milk powder products and high–value functional ingredients to the world’s leading functional food manufacturers.. Madcap (Milk Analysis, Data Capture) technology is a market-leading suite of software modules used in the dairy industry and used by leading companies involved in 40% of the international dairy trade. Madcap technology is used by leading dairy companies for capturing data and the ability to analyse and report on raw milk. This is an opportunity to receive an overview and demonstration of the Madcap system whilst at Synlait. Madcap is configured to work with the US Federal orders requirements as well as accounting for the European Union Milk Quota system. Other configurations include the Chinese, Indian and South American Dairy Industries. The 186 hectare Lincoln University Dairy Farm is an irrigated property, of which 159 hectares is the milking platform. It was converted from sheep and cropping to dairying in 2001 and is managed by the South Island Dairying Development Centre (SIDDC) on behalf of Lincoln University. The SIDDC partnership is a network of industry organisations with complimentary capabilities who partner together to advance South Island Dairying.The Lincoln University Dairy Farm (LUDF) exists to demonstrate world best practice in irrigated pasture based dairy farming. It operates as a commercial dairy farm, not a research farm, though a number of non-intrusive research projects occur within the farm. Benchmarking with other farms shows this business is in the top 1% for productivity and profitability, while the extensive environmental monitoring programme confirms farm practices are protecting the wider environment. |
